Psalm 61:1-8
What is a cry?
to call loudly; shout; yell.
to demand resolution or strongly indicate a particular disposition: The rise in crime cried out for greater police protection.
to utter or pronounce loudly; call out.
to announce publicly as for sale; advertise: to cry one's wares.
to beg or plead for; implore: to cry mercy.
Why is a cry necessary?
To attract attention of someone that can solve a problem that is too big for you? E.g. Bartimaeus
To alert other people to impending danger e.g. Fire! Fire!! Fire!!!
To rally others around you towards a common battle or a common goal.
1 Chronicles 5:19-20 (NKJV)
They made war with the Hagrites, Jetur, Naphish, and Nodab. And they were helped against them, and the Hagrites were delivered into their hand, and all who were with them, for they cried out to God in the battle. He heeded their prayer, because they put their trust in Him.
To scare people or something off even though you may be scared yourself. E.g. Dog running towards you barking, David used this against Goliath
To show the devil and those around you that you mean business
To increase your own strength in what you are doing or saying. Samson in Judges 16:28 received strength to destroy twice as many of God's enemies
When gentleness is no longer getting the job done. You are fed up with current situation and need a change
What can your cry do?
It can rewrite your life history e.g. Jabez
It can connect you to the strength you need to overcome a particular problem or to complete a major assignment e.g. Jesus
It can raise help for your family, church, nation or your neighbor sitting beside you
How can it happen?
There are 2 types of cry
Ordinary cry. May be very loud, long, harsh but ultimately useless e.g.
The cry that God hears. Psa 34:6. May God hear your cry tonight. Deliverance has come your way. All your troubles are about to become history.
Who is this poor man?
Someone who needs help. He was delivered from all his troubles. There may be some who think they are rich and don't need anything. I am not one of them, if you are, just remember me in your prayers.
Someone who refused to be disqualified from praying to God. He cried to God. There are some who can't be bothered to pray. They think what is the use, God does not like me why should I pray. In any case, I have better things to do with my time. I am not one of the I am here to cry unto the Lord and He will hear me. Psa 66:20 - His mercy will ensure your prayer is accepted tonight. Rom 10:13 - whosoever shall call…
Someone who is of a humble heart. Who understands that He could not have been who He is today without God. Who needs God every moment to survive. That's why Jesus said in Matt 5:3, blessed are the poor in spirit for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. God loves such people around Him. Psa 34:15 - his eye is on you and his ears are open.
So this poor man is me. I need help. I am here to pray and I am depending on God fully for my very life. This means when I cry tonight, the Lord will hear me and deliver me from all my troubles.
Let us go and pray…
