Origination – Matthew 2:10 – 11
Note that the wise men gave their gifts unselfishly, not expecting anything in return from the poor family to which Jesus was born.
Today, the idea of giving gifts at Christmas has become highly commercialised so much so that even Muslim countries recognise the money-making power of it and now actively participate.
Does this mean we should stop this tradition? There are 3 good reasons why maybe we should not.
- Giving is a reflection of our Godly-nature. In John 10:10… The thief comes only to steal and to destroy, but Jesus came to give life. Giving is God’s nature and when we do it we reflect God’s nature in us. James 1:17
- Giving is an expression of love for someone. When you love someone then you most likely have a desire to give them something. John 3:16… For God so loved the world (you and me) that He gave. Paul also said it in 2 Cor 8:7-8. As you have abounded in all these other good things, especially love, add giving to it also.
- Giving helps us to remember and appreciate the free gift of salvation that we have been given through Jesus Christ. Isa 9:6, John 3:16. Giving to others is an expression of gratefulness to God for the wonderful gift of Jesus Christ.
In conclusion, can gift giving become the focus of Christmas instead of thanking the Lord for the gift of His Son? Absolutely! Does giving gifts have to take away from the true meaning of Christmas? No, it does not. If we focus on the wonderful gift of salvation the Lord has given us and the other points above, then we do it the right way.
The key is our focus. Is your focus on the gift, or the ultimate gift-giver - our gracious Heavenly Father?
